Patent Engineer with Experience in the Oilfield Industry (Paris Office)
Job Description
The European office of Osha BWB (OBWB), is currently seeking candidates with a Master’s or PhD in Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or oilfield-related Engineering. Individuals who are hired will be placed under the supervision of one or more European patent attorneys for training and development of technical and legal savvy. No Intellectual Property experience is necessary. This is a great position to combine your technical skills with writing, client interaction, and legal concepts. An advanced university degree in a technical field and at least three years in R&D in the oilfield industry (particularly downhole tools, machinery and equipment) are required. An excellent command of English is essential. A good knowledge of French and/or German will be an additional asset.
Written Communication assessment in English must be completed in order to be considered for this position.
The basics of our training program:
Our training program serves as an apprenticeship in European and US patent law. During the first three years of employment, Patent Engineers participate in a combination of in-house lectures and mentorship. During their studies, they also maintain technical expertise through daily application of technical knowledge by prosecuting patent applications. Upon completion of the training program, successful participants may sit for and pass the European Qualifying Examination conducted by the European Patent Office. After passing this exam, they become European patent attorneys.
Core Responsibilities:
Patent engineers are problem solvers. When writing a patent application, they are required to study the technology and learn about the invention. During patent prosecution, they may need to determine how the invention differs from others in the marketplace. They can expect to spend half the day reading and studying the technical analysis of complex scientific topics within a particular patent application. The remainder of the day may be spent writing and scheduling future projects. Some days may be focused on technology in one field, while other days may require work in more than one technical area. Patent engineers, in collaboration with patent attorneys, continuously work together to solve problems on behalf of clients.
Qualifications:
Applicants must be European citizens, or otherwise authorized to work in the European Union. Individuals who have earned a Master’s or PhD in Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or oilfield-related Engineering and have worked in R&D in the oilfield industry are encouraged to apply. Candidates should enjoy drafting narrative and persuasive documents while critically analyzing and solving problems. Time management skills are also critical.
